Youth of May (Season 1) (2021) – Storyline:

Youth of May (TV Series (2021)): In May, 1980, during the turbulent times of the Gwangju Uprising, Hee-Tae and Myung-Hee fall in love. Their love seems destined by fate.

This is a story of people who would have lived and loved like no other if that May had been the same as any other normal and sunny May. An emotional melodrama of passionate youths running toward their fate, unaware of the whirlwind of history that will be sweeping them. A man and a woman are caught in the mayhem of wails, blood, cries, and acrid smokes during May of 1980 in Gwangju, Korea. Losing their loved ones in front of their eyes and having to overcome constant crises of life and death, the two hardly get a chance to exchange their over-flowing love for each other.

Review of Youth of May (2021) – Korean Drama:

Youth of May is definitely one of the biggest gems of 2021. It’s a sweet old-school romance in the backdrop of harsh Gwangju Uprising. If you’re aware of the political and social backdrop, you will probably enjoy it even more. But even without it, Youth of May is a soothing love story. It reminds you what it’s like to be innocently in love. It’s old-fashioned and sincere and gives you a satisfying sense of nostalgia, even if you weren’t alive during that time.

Lee Do Hyun has proved his versatility as an actor this year. While 18 Again is the crowd-pleaser (and for good reason), I don’t know why but none of his characters can steal your heart like Hee Tae. It might be bold of me to say this but Lee Do Hyun outshined everyone on this show.
